volvo penta 4.3 I think its an eletrical proplem !!

I have a 2003 stracraft with a 4.3 volvo penta engine . I just went to start it and it wont run unless the key is in the start position when i bring it to the run position it stalls. Buy if I hold it to the start position it runs fine. any help or pointers would greatly be appriciated. I am pretty handy but this one has me stumped. Thanks for taking time to help me out. Joe

Could be a faulty ignition switch or maybe you forgot the safety kill switch lanyard. other than that, going to need some full model numbers for the engine or the serial number. Not all 4.3's are the same.

The model number is 4.3GL-C
The L indicates it's carbed and non fuel injection, C indicates the model version.

Is there a way for me to check the ignition switch.

When you turn the key on, does the instruments move? If so, the key switch works.
Or to check with a meter, turn the key to the run position see if you have power to the I terminal with the purple wire hooked to it.

The instruments do move but the volt meter jumps to 14 when I relese the key and it stalls. Then it goes back down.

Thank you so much Don, It was the safty switch i pulled the swich out and even though the lanured was on it wasent making contact so thanks for making me double check that. My next project is going to try and tackle changing the hydrolic lines going from the trim pump to the out drive any pointers on that one for this novis machanic. Joe

I had that same problem at the boat ramp with the boat off the trailer in the water. It was 100 degrees and the wife and kids were getting antsy. As I sat there in the chair with my head down trying to figure out what to do, I saw the safety switch. Pulled it off, put it back on, and "poof" it cranked.
