The 4.3GL in my 2000 Larson SEI 186 has been running with a high idle speed, around 1100 RPM. This is well above the 600 range I have read that it should be. Im kind of a newb to these engines, can somebody walk me through how to adjust the idle? Im assuming I should do it on the water and while in gear. Thank you very much!

You should include the full model of your engine. That is the letters after the GL on the engine tag on the circuit breaker box. The idle adjustment screw is on the carburetor by the throttle cable and throttle. Turn it slowly until the idle drops to the required rpms which are also on the tag.

Thank you. The boat is in the marina at my slip, I will get all the details the next time I head up there, but thank you for the information

Pull the throttle cable off, adjust the carb idle screw. Put the cable back on and adjust its length so it slips onto the control lever without disturbing the idle setting.

Ayuh,.... The cable, when connected to the carb linkage, should be applin' abit of pressure against the idle stop screw on the carb,....

Not alot, but solid tension,....

I had something similar happen a few years ago. Turned out to be the throttle assembly. It might be something to look at if adjusting the idle screw does not yield results.

So I adjusted the idle screw, and that doesn't seem to make a difference. When I first start the boat it idles at 600 rpm. However after taking the boat out and going full throttle, the idle rpm in neutral is around 1100rpm. This causes it to shift hard when put in gear, and from that point the idle will remain high... I also attempted to adjust the idle screw at this time and could not get the engine to run any lower.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you take the throttle cable off when doing your adjusting?

You are adjusting the idle throttle plate screw, not the idle mixture screw right?

I did not take the throttle cable off. I believe it was the idle plate screw, as when I turned it to the right the idle speed increased.

Is it normal to increase idle speed like this after the engine warns up?

Thank you

You nee to take the throttle cable off, adjust the idle and then adjust the throttle cable so that it puts some positive pressure against the idle screw.

The throttle cable isnt allowing the throttle assembly to return back to idle. You can confirm this by unhooking the throttle cable, revving the engine and seeing if it returns to idle on its own. This is common as cables age, they develop slack in them so once extended (while you are driving) they don't fully return to their neutral position.

It's a simple fix. Unhook the throttle cable and readjust so that it provides a slight closing force on the throttle assembly.

Thank you for the great explanation! I will do it next time I get on the boat and update
