I recently bought this boat from a friend, good price, some deferred maintenance, etc.... He only owned it for a year or two and didn’t do much to it.

My buddy stated he had trouble getting the boat to stay running. His neighbor/ mechanic told him the carb needed a rebuild. I looked at the receipts from the prior owner and found a local shop had replaced the original carb with a used carb they had. There are no numbers or tags on the carb, but after a little research I believe this one is a Rochester 2bbl with 2 idle mix screws. The carb looked pretty bad and wouldn’t stay running for me with the boat on the garden hose. it would start right away and die after a few seconds even after adding throttle. I replaced the fuel filter, new fuel, etc... sounds like the float might need attention. Tried a little to find somewhere to have the carb rebuilt and found dead ends.

so I did a little research and found the boat came with a Nikki 2 bbl part number 856845. I found a reman carb online for $400 and put that on. Boat started and ran fine, until the choke kicked off, them the rpms rise to 2500 - 3000. I disconnected the throttle linkage completely and no change.

I did a vacuum leak test and believe I found a leak in the intake manifold gasket on the 1,3,5 bank about midway. I pulled the intake and sure enough the gasket was compromised there. Replaced the gaskets, RTV,d the front and rear where there is no gasket, spreading the rtv up 1/2” up the gasket tabs on each end.

put it all back together and same thing, can’t seem to dial down the rpm’s at all. Could there be a vacuum leak within the new carb? Thinking I should send it back and try to have the old carb rebuilt? Can’t afford too many more $400 hits with no success.

Any help would be appreciated.

First, welcome aboard

Second, your motor should have had a Holley carb.

Instead of throwing parts at it, what troubleshooting have you done?

I would think a vacuum leak wouldn't cause it to run at higher rpm, it would be rough and slow down.

Check the idle adjust screw and see if the throttle plate closes. If it doesn't close completely with the idle screw backed off, then could be the throttle plate, arm or rod is bent. May have been damaged in shipment

Hi

perhaps not your issue but I’ve seen this issue with a similar AQ205 (same as the 431). It turned out that one exhaust manifold was taking in a little water and must have had a low idle. The idle speed screw was turned up to counter it.

could be the choke having the usual issues
