I have a 2003 Volvo Penta that had been running fine but unexpectedly would not start after a day out. While returning to the port with just the starboard engine I attempted again to start the port engine and it fired up and ran without any further issues. The following weekend I could not get the engine to start at all but it would crank. I am not sure this is related but could be...The alternator was replaced early in the season the old one had frozen up. Batteries were also replaced new this Spring. Here are some of the things I have already checked:

1) Kill switch. Ran a jumper cable across it and it still failed to start.
2) Check for fire - Attached a spark tester and seen that I do have a spark.
3) Checked fuel pump pressure - 50 psi in "run" position. Checked the good engine as well and it had the same readings.
4) Batteries- each of them showing 12.5+ volts
5) Checked for corrosion on terminals and have attempted to get to the negative terminal on the back side of the engine to check it but have not been able to get to it.
6) Checked all fuses located on top ot the engine (good) and swapped fuel and ignition relays with the good engine (good engine still runs).
7) I have pulled the ignition coil now and about to replace this coming weekend although I am doubtful this is the fix I am down to that, can't find a mechanic that is not booked up for the next two months!

Addtional symptoms:

1) voltmeter on console indicates 0.0 while the battery is confirmed good.

2) While the engine will crank, it is cranking slightly stronger when the port engine is running.

I hope someone can get me pointed in the right direction on this. Would love to be on the water with the other boaters instead of stuck in the dock with a hopeless look!

Not a VP dude but the are similarity to Mercs. You have two relays on the engine and they are both the same. One is the main power relay which turns the computer on and activates power to circuits. The other which is right next to it, turns on the fuel pump. Swap the two relays, or take the ones off the good engine and swap them with the other.

The intermittent crank-but-no-start with my 5.0 GXiB was traced to a cracked rotor. Ran fine if it started.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have already swapped over the relays with no luck but looks like it is time to check on the rotor and see if that is the issue.

Just looked up the GXI-B and it shows to have what most call the crab style distributer cap. This is known to look great but be bad, and I call the crap cap. Anyone who has one of these style caps needs to carry an extra one just incase. I would suggest try that
