I have a 2003 Volvo Penta that had been running fine but unexpectedly would not start after a day out. While returning to the port with just the starboard engine I attempted again to start the port engine and it fired up and ran without any further issues. The following weekend I could not get the engine to start at all but it would crank. I am not sure this is related but could be...The alternator was replaced early in the season the old one had frozen up. Batteries were also replaced new this Spring. Here are some of the things I have already checked:
1) Kill switch. Ran a jumper cable across it and it still failed to start.
2) Check for fire - Attached a spark tester and seen that I do have a spark.
3) Checked fuel pump pressure - 50 psi in "run" position. Checked the good engine as well and it had the same readings.
4) Batteries- each of them showing 12.5+ volts
5) Checked for corrosion on terminals and have attempted to get to the negative terminal on the back side of the engine to check it but have not been able to get to it.
6) Checked all fuses located on top ot the engine (good) and swapped fuel and ignition relays with the good engine (good engine still runs).
7) I have pulled the ignition coil now and about to replace this coming weekend although I am doubtful this is the fix I am down to that, can't find a mechanic that is not booked up for the next two months!
Addtional symptoms:
1) voltmeter on console indicates 0.0 while the battery is confirmed good.
2) While the engine will crank, it is cranking slightly stronger when the port engine is running.
I hope someone can get me pointed in the right direction on this. Would love to be on the water with the other boaters instead of stuck in the dock with a hopeless look!
