Hello... I have a 2005 volvo penta 5.0 gxi e that has a torn rubber exhaust bellow (right below the exhaust elbow, part #20 on volvo exhaust diagram). I got a new bellows and thought I could replace by unclamping the rings, pulling out the old bellows and getting the new one on and reclamping. When I started pulling off the old bellows, water was rushing in. The bellows is probably a little below the water line and the water was seeking its own level. I could try to put the new one on real quick but I am worried if something happes (ie it doesnt fit on smoothly) too much water will get in the engine compartment. Anyody have any tips.

Thanks

What options do you have to get it up out of the water, like take it to a lift or put it back on the trailer?

I can take it out of the water sometime next week, I just thought I could get this fix done with boat in water so I can be out this weekend. It would not be a difficult fix if I did not have to deal with the water. Im just worried if I take of the old bellows and cant put fit the new one on for some reason that I would not be able to get the old one back on either, and water would rush into the bilge. Bilge pump working fine now but I dont want to chance it.

Thanks for the help

No, you can't change the exhaust bellows in the water. You have to remove the outdrive to access the snap ring that holds the exhaust bellows into the pivot housing.

PS. A damaged or even missing exhaust bellows will not allow water into the boat (Engine compartment). It always has water and exhaust in it.

Thanks Don! I just want to make sure we are talking about the same part, this bellows in in the engine compartment right below the exhaust elbow (it was formerly called a hose). It is NO. 20 on the below link.

I almost completelty removed the old bellows yesterday but a lot of water was coming in so I put it back on for now. It seems like I could get this bellows off fairly easily I am just worried about getting the new one on with water coming in.

Nope, we weren't talking about the same one. For some reason I looked right over the part you put in parentheses. (right below the exhaust elbow, part #20 on volvo exhaust diagram) Ooops.

Sorry about that.

Those do set pretty low in the water.

Can I do the replacement with the boat in the water. Any tips?

You already know it's below the water line and are concerned.

So I assume you would like someone that is not there, and can't see what is going on, doesn't know your abilities and what you have to work with, to make the decision for you knowing full well if they are wrong you could sink the boat is that it? That way if something does go wrong you can blame someone else for your problem.

Hmmmmmmm, not me.

Sorry, I posted before your response. Looking for no one to blame, just seeing if anyone else has experience with doing this fix. I am no expert but fairly capable of most repairs if I have a game plan to follow. I guess I should try to haul it up on the ramp to be safe
