volvo penta 5.0 rpms too high

i have the volvo penta 5.0fi sx series with 302 v8 it shows about 1500 rpms when idle but sounds right when im running about 40 mph its showing 4000 rpms and it has plenty more throttle it has a fairly new stainless prop i know the gauge is reading high when idleing but engines got a lot more power left when it says 4000 rpm what could help me get them down. By the way thanks you guys are great.

You may need a different prop.

Post this in the "Prop Questions and Topics" section, give more information about what boat this is in and what drive and drive ratio it has, current prop pitch, along with the 40mph at 4000rpm. Also give a good guess as to what RPM it would reach. By the way, it will be OK to let it rev to 5000rpm then se if you think it has more to give.

Also verifying that the RPM is correct is always good.
