Volvo Penta 5.0FL - Quick questions for the experts here

Good morning,

I am winterizing my Volvo Penta 5.0FL. Its a 1995 motor. I ordered the repair manual and also looked here for the owners manual on how to get all the water out of the motor but the repair manual doesn't have a section on that procedure and the owners manual section here does not list that motor. I have read everything possible here so I have done my homework. I want to winterize this myself. Not because I can't afford a dealer to do it but the closest dealer is about 1 hour away.

Last night I fogged the engine and that went well. I drained both petcocks on each side of the blocks and also drained the manifolds on each side. I also took the hoses apart to the water pump and drained those also. I plan on filling the hoses with antifreeze till they start to drain out the petcocks.

Question being, am I good if I do that? Also, I would love to find an owners manual for that motor but the library here does not have it.

One last question. I had the lower unit replaced with a new one three weeks ago. (bad story, don't ask) Should I drain the oil out of the lower unit still since its new? Seems like a waste to dump that new oil.

Thanks for your help!

You neeed to pull the hoses off the raw water pump, crank the engine over a couple times revolutions to push the water out of the pump, and make sure the power steering cooler is drained.
When you took the plugs out of the block, did you use a screw, nail, or something to probe the holes to make sure they didn't get blocked by debris? They get blocked a lot on raw water cooled engines.

You can get an owners manual by going to the link below, type in 5.0FL in the engine type box, then choosing the last engine that comes up in the list. None of the others have a manual listed.

No need to replace the oil, but I would sure remove the lower drain plug and let a little out to make sure there is no water in it.

Hey Don, thanks so much for the location of the manual. Yep, I did stick a very small screwdriver in the petcock. She was flowing very well and flowed for quite some time. I'm one of those guys that's going to put antifreeze back in for peace of mind. I love being on the boat even when its sitting in the barn.

That's another story. I did not want to shrink wrap it and sit it outside. I have a 40' x 90' pole barn with concrete floor but the trusses were not tall enough for the boat. Neither were the doors. The doors were only 8' tall. What I did is had a truss company make 6 scissor trusses and I installed them against the existing trusses and then cut the guts out of the old trusses. On the gable end of the building I installed a 12' tall by 10' wide roll up door. Now she sits inside nice and dry!

Don,

Got the entire list done but the only item is struggling with is the location of the power steering cooler. I have read through all my manuals and am still having trouble locating it. Any ideas on this 5.0FL as to the location?
