Volvo Penta 5.0GL HELP

I have a Regal 2100SLR with a Volvo Penta 5.0GL. After I turn of engine to swim/goofoff or just dock for a while ( 20-45 minutes or more), the engine will have turn turn over for several seconds before cranking. Has been doing this for a couple of years but I have been just tolerating the issue. Now I’m tired of it. If I start it back up fairly soon after turning off it will fire right back up. Seems like it’s loosing prime. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The carb is probably leaking fuel. Suggest rebuilding the carb

No, because with a carb, even if all the gas from the carb to the fuel pump drained back, the carb bowl will still have fuel in it to start. Sounds like after you stop, the carb starts loosing gas slowly down into the intake. When you go to start after a while, the intake is saturated some with gas. You need to crank long enough to expel the gas and get some air in there along with filling the bowl back up.

If you give it 1/4 throttle before you start cranking does it catch any faster?

is this a Holley 2 bbl or 4bbl? Either way rebuild kits are readily available.

I havent relly tried that. I brought the boat home from lake storage so I will give that a try this afternoon. How hard is it to rebuild the carb?

Not hard and about medium skill level. The medium level is in the setting or the float level, drop, choke and such. Cleaning is the hard part, and this is only in making sure the small idle circuits are clean. Use some real small wire to ensure they are clean.

The rest is fairly easy.
