Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi Fuel Pump issue

I have a 2007 Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi that has been sitting for a couple months and went to start it the other day and at first it started up right away and ran for a couple minutes. The next day went to start it and it ran rough for a minute and then sputtered out and will not start again. The fuel had stabilizer in it but thought it might be an ethanol issue/bad fuel. Replaced the fuel/water sep filter and filled it with clean gas, that didnt help. It seems starved for fuel and if I add gas to the air intake it starts right away. Im wondering if there is some kind of screen in the fuel pump that is clogged. Ive checked the gas tank vent and that is not clogged. Also tried feeling on the intake side of the fuel filter while cranking the engine and could not feel any suction at all. Im hoping it could be something that could be cleaned out vs. needing a whole new pump.. Not clear on how it could be working one minute and then nothing. Any suggestions or advice on troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe

Not clear on how it could be working one minute and then nothing.

Even tires on your car fail suddenly, they were fine when you parked it, an hour later it had a flat.

Everything on that engine is controlled by electricity and includes, relays, fuses, fuel pump, wiring connections, injectors, ECM, and the list goes on. One corroded terminal, and it won't start. You should probably jump for joy when it does start.

Now, on to your problem. When you turn the ignition switch to run (not start) do you hear the pumps run for 2 seconds and stop?

When you changed your fuel filter, did you empty the old one in a container and check the contents for water? If not, you should have, and should in the future. Get a new filter, remove the filter now on the engine and empty the contents in a clear container and check for water in the fuel. If clean, install the new filter. If it had water, you need to do some checking before wasting your new filter.

Hi Don,
Yes when you turn the key to run I can hear the pump run for 2 seconds then it stops. Also when I changed the fuel filter I did empty the filter into a container and the fuel looked ok.

Hey Don, If the pump does run for a couple of seconds when the key is turned to run does that mean the problem is not with the pump. OR is there a way I can jump the pump to see if it will run for more than those first couple of seconds. Thanks Joe

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi Fuel Pump issue

You have 5.7GXi-J model, sorry, can't really help you with any manuals, but you will need to do some basic testing, compression, spark on all cylinders, etc. You will also have to check fuel pump pressure and make sure it's to proper specs. Then you need to run a diagnostic computer on it and make sure the sensors are all telling the truth and there are no trouble codes.
You will need an OEM manual for all that and the proper tools.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi Fuel Pump issue

Ok Don, thanks for the response. I was hoping that since it does start up if I pour gas directly into the air intake but then cuts out once that gas is used up that the problem was just with the fuel pump and that could be troubleshooted but i guess its not that simple. I will look for a manual and try what you suggest. Do you know if that model fuel pump can be disassmbled and cleaned out?

There is nothing to take apart, if you so, you can't put it back together. Besides, if you do the pressure checks and it's OK, then why destroy your expensive pumps?
