I have been searching these pages and figure, most likely U joints? but here are my specifics, would appreciate another opinion, Thanks!
2006 Four Winns 240 with 225 hrs. makes a howling (dry or spun bearing) sound at idle, best I can tell from behind the engine. It doesn't change pitch when I put it in gear or turn right to left. There is a slight vibration at the wheel lock either direction but has done that since it was new. Engine runs perfect shifts great. Oil pressure 30lbs idle 75 at 3000rpm, temp constant 175. Engine oil and gear lube full and look beautiful: like honey. No water leaking in bilge, not a drop.

Definitely sounds like the gimbal bearing. Have you ever greased it? Either way, removal of the outdrive and inspection of the gimbal bearing your new high priority...lol. If you feel incapable of removing the drive yourself, you had better start calling around shops.

I appreciate the speedy response! I have a decent set of tools and have done a fair bit of "land-lubbing" engine and tranny work in my garage.
After reading a few threads on removing the outdrive and it looks pretty straight forward. Some threads say there is a zerk fitting some not. This is a 2006 Volvo duo prop DP-s model. Any clarification? From some photos I've seen it looks like a snap ring and out the bearing comes? Also I have read a few cautionary tales of alignment, pressurizing, etc.... If I just remove the out drive and don't move anything else, forward to those 6 bolts, what precautions should I be aware of.
Thanks again!

I have a Seloc, but nothing can replace a conversation with gentle wise men when ripping into a families favorite past time. For example - Thanks a million for the link you sent. I never would have known such detailed info existed had I just grabbed the Seloc and a pair vise grips!
So long for now, and thanks again!

Your right Don, but you can't get Volvo service manuals from Volvo. They don't have them.Called them last week and they told me they don't stock them.

Have you looked at the link I posted?????? That IS the OEM service manual for his drive.
There are also links to download them up in the stickies if people would just look around.
