I have a 2006 290 Monterey with twin 5.7 Volvo Pentas. The motor starts and runs great when i turn off the engine for awhile it does not want to start normal.when it does start you smell fuel and gray smoke kind of like a vapor comes out of the exhaust the other motor on the boat starts normal.Any ideas

Sounds a bit like a fuelling issue, perhaps a sensor has a fault. As you have 2 engines I would be inclined to do a quick swap of the ECU to see if that clears the problem or not.
We could do with a bit more info re: what engine you have because there are a multitude of 5.7's.

Try a compression test, I had the same symptoms as you describe.
I had rotten exhaust valves due to a leak at the manifold to riser joint.

Had same on my 4.3, new cap and rotor sorted it out straight away, starting it hot was a nightmare and very annoying, also put new leads and plugs on a few weeks later.

well I found my problem seems that I had a loose hose that would not allow the motor to cool properly. the hose is the flush hose that allows us to flush the motor and drives on our lift. When the motor was running warm the computer would not allow it to start correctly. I have the boat in the shop for drive service this is what was found. As far as the drives I have listen to horror stories about the xpd drives mine have not been serviced since 2009 one bellow had a small hole in it and the other was fine. The bellow and the shaft is being replaced. That really not that expensive. The fact that the prop was never off was the main problem it had to be cut off. I recommend to anyone grease your props every 6 months and service your drives every year and you will have less cost on the xpd drives.
