Hello. Like the forums here, but first new thread I've started.

I have been trying to find fluid capacities for my Volvo Penta 5.7 OSI-EF engines. The owners manual and service manual only show oil capacity (5.5 qts). I've been trying to find how much coolant is required and how much power steering is required. Don't know how much of each to buy.

Where can I find this info if the service manual doesn't have it? All the expert manuals I have go into great detail (torque settings for everything, etc), but no fluid capacities except for oil. I hope someone can help here. The dealer doesn't know either.

Thanks!

welcome aboard

volvo generally uses engine oil for power steering. the standard saginaw power steering pump "canned ham" reservoir will use about a quart if you flush the whole system

coolant will be dependant on the size of the reservoir. assume about 2-1/2 gallons total (block, hoses, heat exchanger) you will have some left over if you get 3 gallons of 50/50 premix. or buy two gallons of 100% and mix yourself. if your engine has MOAS, then it will use all 3.

My 5.0 GL took about 1 quart of ATF Dexron II power steering fluid when it was nearly bone dry- hope that helps

Thanks guys! That is helpful information. I just can't believe this type of data is so hard to come by. The service manuals go into great detail on torque values for all sorts of fasteners, but not fluid capacity. Doesn't make much sense to me, but being an engineer, logic and critical thinking gets me in trouble all the time.

Happy Easter and God Bless!

Look at owners manual for maintenance items. Service manual for repairs
