I have a volvo Penta 5.7 that just recently started to overheat. I am getting over heating at idle, if i give it some rps or wot the temp levels off to normal. I just replaced the impeller with no luck. Also if i attach the garden hose to the flush the temp also stay normal and does not overheat. Please give me some input on what can cause this. Thanks Tom

Without a FULL model number or the serial number for your engine, your question is basically un-answerable.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7

Hi guys, I am new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 2006 volvo penta 5.7 with 200 hrs on it. Recently the engine started stalling out after it had been running for awhile. When I leave the marina I have no problems at all. If I start the engine up after an hr or 2 of sitting it stalls out unless I pump the throttle to keep it running. Also the engine is making a popping backfire noise before it stalls out. I changed the fuel/water seperator and no luck. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it. I'd rather ask here before I drop a ton of $$ at the marina. Thanks Tom

Ayuh,... Sounds like Bad gas, or otherwise, a fuel restriction...

Could be anything from the tank to the carb, or either, or both...

Was there any crud in the old filter,..?? what color was the gas,..??

Ok I will get the serial # dont have it right now. As far as the gas Im pretty sure its good gas the fuel/water sep. looked really clean and had no signs of water in it. Even though it is seperate tanks my other engine runs fine. I add stabalizer when I get fuel. Full Throttle the engines sound great.

Ok the engine is a volvo 5.7 GI-E Serial # 4012165711. It seems like the whinning noise is coming from the fuel pump. Is it possible to clean the pump or do I have to replace it.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7

Hi Tvigg27

I have the same make and year motor. The fuel pump assembly comes apart with limited mechanical knowledge and all screens on the pumps can be checked for blockage, which seems to happen a lot with these pumps. A careful clean and clean reassembly and my pumps were up and running quietly again. The O-rings must be replaced as you do not want water leaking into the fuel reservoir, or visa versa. Also don't forget the filter on the fuel pressure regulator on the Hi pressure injection rail.

Electrically Disconnect alternate pumps and turn the ignition switch to on. This way you can identify which pump is making the whining sound. The low pressure pump, 1st pump in the circuit, is used to deliver and maintain the fuel pressure in the reservoir. The second pump delivers the hi pressure fuel to the injector circuit at a higher pressure (Reservoir pressure + second pump pressure). If one pump or the other is unable to deliver its pressure, the whole system will be low on pressure delivery.

If you need any further information, I would be glad to help.

Hey Safisher71, thanks for the help I am going to try everything you said to do and hopefully it will work. 1 question i did have you said you had the same problem, did your engine stall when it heated up also, mine seems to give me problems when the pump gets hot. Thanks Tom

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7

Hi Tom

My motor was hard to start and always required some throttle to start, hot or cold. Ran fine and smooth but would not push higher than 3800 rpm. I figured fuel pressure as the injectors give a larger squirt of fuel at start. Now I do not have to use throttle and the whining pump noise is gone. Have not tested at WOT yet as I am installing SS one piece exhausts and closed cooling.

The pump running hot is mostly caused by the cooling water circuit around the fuel cell reservoir being blocked. Check this is clear and clean around the reservoir and both pipes from the thermostat and to the exhaust. Often fills with mud and other crud. This cools the fuel that is under hi pressure and has been circulating above a hot engine block.
Remember you will need a set of torque screw drivers to open the system up. See another thread in here for further explanations and pictures.
The fuel system seems to be a problem on these motors, so it is wise to start here.
Good Luck and tell me how it goes.
