So my fresh water 2006 5L GXI overheated on me at idle. I replaced the fresh water impellor pump and took it out the next day and the top rad hose blew off. I put it back on and the engine wouldn't start. It was hydro locked only on one half of the engine? Drained the water out and ran it, has good compression so i dont suspect a head gasket. There wasnt much left of my impellor pump it was pretty much worn to nothing. I suspect rubber pieces stuck in the cooling system but what would cause the cyls to fill with water??

If it overheated bad you may have blown the head gasket, or your exhaust manifold/elbow gaskets could have leaked water into the cyls. Sounds like you have some work ahead of you. Take off the thermostat housing and clean it out, look for impeller parts jammed in there, as well as in the hoses that feed the exhaust manifolds and the pipe fittings on the front of each manifold. Check your thermostat to make sure it opens at 160* or so, and get in the habit of changing the raw water impeller about every 3 seasons or so, unless you get into shallow sandy water might have to do it annually then.
Hope you don't wind up having to do this, I had a bad overheat in '13, then the head gaskets blew at the end of '16, wound up doing a top end overhaul (reman cyl heads, all new gaskets, new exhaust etc, not too bad of a job:
