Volvo Penta 8.1 hours before major rebuild

Hi,
Having a discussion with my husband regarding when the Volvo Pental 8.1 would need major repairs. We are looking at 24' Cobalts with this engine and wondering how long after we bought it would we be dumping a lot of money into the engine. I say it's around 1000 hours, and he's saying 500. This will determine what boat we end up buying, so please fill us in.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Properly maintained, it oughta be several thousand hours,...

I agree with Bond-o. If you properly maintain it, the motor will outlast the boat, and the next one its put in. usually about 4-5000 hours on average.

at 500 hours, the boat is just broke in.
