hey there guys, just picked up a 1988 Arrow Glass 17 foot volvo AQ131A Motor with 275 Outdrive....

i havnt taken it out yet, but ive ran it in a big bucket, runs ok, seems rough like timing is off..

Heres the list of questions I have..

A. how to check the timing, ( iknow how to check timing ) but the easiest way get to the crank.

B. Seems to me the exchanger cap is leaking.. is this normal for these?

C. Common issues with that motor? if any..

D. is there any companies that make trolling motor brackets for ski boats?? ive been looking like CRAZY and cant find anything..

E. How the hell do i change the oil?? suck it through the dipstick?

F. Anything else I should know before we take her out??

A. Timing light, how you get to the crank depends on the access on your particular boat and what you have to move/remove to get to it.

B. No, leaks are never normal. You probably need a new cap.

C. They don't have a choke, can be a bear to start. They like to have proper tuneup to run their best. Dwell, timing, correct spark plugs etc.

D. Post in the Electrical, Electronics, and Trolling motors forum, bet they can answer that one for you.

E. Yes

F. Check the gear lube in the outdrive, make sure the ujoint bellows is in good shape, if it leaks, it gets expensive.

another question,

theres a oil leak from the cam seal im pretty sure... anybody know if you have to pull the cam to change that? if so, any special things to remember when doing it?

also, what prop would be perfect for this boat for tubing and fishing and expected top speed?? i want something thats going to make it easy to tube and go around 40 mph if possible...

also does anybody know what kit i need to order for the electronic ignition?? i want to get a new timing belt and the hotfire ignition i think is what its called... also what type of advance is it? spring or vacuum? how does the electronic ignition work? like is it still spring or vacuum advance? or is it electronic advance (if theres such a thing) thanks again

also, for the penta 275 outdrive, is there a moving brace or anything for the motor, im just using a rope and tying it up for now...

can't tell you what prop is right until you test the boat.

There are a few electronic ignitions out there. Just go by your engine model number, AQ131A. It uses mechanical advance, springs and weights, to advance the timing.
also, for the penta 275 outdrive, is there a moving brace or anything for the motor, im just using a rope and tying it up for now...

There should be an electronic lift for the outdrive. Toggle switch at the helm.:confused:

it has that, but im looking for something for transportation.. like my old bassboat had a bar that i put in to cinch the motor down..

it's called a "Conveyor Stop" (no, I don't know why, it's one of those Swedish to English translator things). anyway, it's PN 897824 but you will have to get one from your local Volvo dealer. They are only about 15 -20 bucks.

i got an electronic ignition changover from hotspark.com and its working just fine ... alot cheaper than petronix or sierras and it fits right where the points went so no modifications

Thank you so much guys... just orderend the one on ebay, the volvo dealer said 45+shipping, and 3 weeks.. ha... im gonna order the hotspark right now...
