Hi, I wanted to gather some information, I dont know if this is the correct section to be posting under, but since i could not find a paint section. Here Goes...
Some of you may be Familiar with a thread some guy named BeeGee posted a How to Paint Aluminum (Especially Outdrives) somewhere on google... I really liked the process and was hoping to possibly do it on my outdrive...

So as far as paint removal goes, I am either going with a Glass Bead Blasting shop for 90 bucks an hour... or i will do it myself...
I tried yesterday using my own Harbor Freight Angle Grinder and a Poly Abrasive Disc... (works really well at getting paint and rust off of the aluminum trailer i used to have)

Question is...
I did not feel any damage on the drive (my junk drive) after i tested the Disc on it... and it looked fine and aluminum looked great, and it literally took seconds to remove the hard to remove volvo paint (so they say)..
Is there any potential damage i am creating .. .removing the paint this way?

and second part of the question is... I want to use 2 Part Epoxy Polyurethane coatings... would that work for me?
And since i dont want to use the Spray Paint that volvo provides i will just get a 2 Part Epox. Poly. coating in the color grey that closely matches it...
Please view the videos and tell me if this is an ok thing to do...
sorry for the long pauses in the video its because i had to set my phone down while i was using the grinder.. not too long though. thanks in advance. -vlad

Re: Volvo Penta AQ270 Paint Removal and New Paint

Since posting this i have been doing more research.. it looks like we do have a Thread on the steps to prep a drive for paint ourselves! thanks Yacht Dr. and Don for putting it on your list.. silly me i havent been on that list in quite some time...
But anyways...
So if i prep the Aluminum per those instructions... and use ZincChromate Primer on the drive...
would i be able to just use Volvo Penta's Spray cans (say Metallic Silver) after a couple coats of that... than using a Clear Coat??

Any advice my fellow boaters?

Do you think the finish will look glossy with the Spray paint Volvo Provides??
Like a brand new outdrive... be it that i prep it correctly?

Would i need to find the manufacturer of the spray paint volvo sells to get the correct clear cote? or can i just use clearcoat from Rustoleum (also in rattle can)

It said clear enamel when I clicked on it. That is clear coat. It will look shiny.
YMMV using rustoleum. Probably will work OK.

If you are being a purest about this, the factory color on this vintage drive was Aquamatic white, and I don't think it was all that glossy. Silver gloss should look fine too.
