Volvo Penta crank no start

I have a 5.7 Volvo GI-g
The high pressure fuel pump creates 55 psi so I have fuel.
I can hear the fuel pump cycle when key is turned on.
The plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are new.
I have spark at the plug.
The battery cranks the starter well, not a bad battery.

But the engine still doesn't start. All summer it has been good until now.

Also the fuel filter is new and the boat has had about 3 or 4 tanks of fuel through it this year.

When I crank the engine I do smell fuel in the exhaust so I don't think it is fuel or the injectors.

Any guesses?

You say you have spark and you smell gas out the exhaust yet it does not run; ... If your nose is correct you don't have spark, or you nose does not smell gas.

That said, I'm not a VP expert but I was under the impression that the GL is a carb motor? If it's a carb motor then 55 psi is WAY to high, should be 4-7 psi

It is a 2007 gi-g. Lowercase helps. Multipoint fuel injection.

It does try to start a little, just not enough to actually run.

I was thinking timing, but my distributor is lined up at the mark it has always been at in the past. Unfortunately the nearest Volvo dealer is a 6 hour drive one way on the highway, so I am still accepting any guesses of causes.

Also checked the rotor and cap, I didn't see any cracks, or anything out of place.

Something else to think about. Normally my engine starts right up so I don't look at the tach. But it keeps climbing and climbing as I crank the engine, it will show up to 4000 rpm, I don't know if it is because of the resolution of the crank position sensor at slow speeds or is the sensor going bad causing the spark at the wrong time.

Does anyone know how many rpm their tach shows when they crank a fuel injected engine? Does it show approx 200-300 or something different

The tach should show around 300 rpm while cranking. Your not starting so we need to find out what is not present

I replaced all the plugs (NGK TR55ix) , not because it needed it, just because I am grasping at straws.
The plugs smelled of gasoline, not wet, but they definitely had an odor to them. I wasn't trying to crank the engine just before I changed them, or I am sure they would have been wet.

Thanks AllDodge, If the tach should show 300 rpm, I am guessing crank position sensor now. It is only a guess because the sun is down and I can't check it tonight any longer. However I do have spark and fuel, and I am guessing air so it should run if the spark is occurring at the correct time, but if the crank position sensor is going bad, then the spark could be happening at the wrong time and not allowing it to start.

Just to finish up this thread for future searching. The issue was an intermittent dead crank position sensor, when I checked spark it worked, but later checked again and had no spark. Have put lots and lots of engine cycles on the engine and lots of hours. Problem is Fixed
