this is just a start I thought to inlight me on what to expect for the following boat condition:

- Boat: Doral 245, 2008.
- Engine: Volvo Penta 5.7 osxi-gf (160 hours).
- Drive: XDP-B 1.96

the above has not been used for past 16 months, and is moored on water in a "Sea" marina. its offered for me for a low price, and I do expect to do major maintenance before I start using it including the antifouling (currently Propeller is not visible since covered by sea growth shells!).

my question, What is thw worst case scenario that Engine and Drive can be in order to do the price negotiation, if actually maybe it is too late for this boat to be healthy again !

based on your answers, am planning to take it out, clean it, get the dealer to health check and so on, but i really need some highlights on what to expect!

Finally, I read some bad comments online the above mentioned drive, is it true?!

Thanks in advance..

If I were you I'd keep looking. The XDP drives have a bad reputation, and Volvo discontinued them. Lots of people had problems, and have spent thousands of dollars fixing the problems.

I would buy a boat with an OMC stringer drive and a Mercruiser 470 as an engine before I would buy a boat with an XDP drive. And I am a Volvo fan.

The worst disaster Volvo ever had.

Run like Hell and if you want to keep a boat in a salt water marina, make your life easier and buy a boat with an OUTBOARD!! Ask around and find out which brand of outboard is easiest to get serviced where you are, and buy a boat with that brand hanging off the back of it. Keeping an Inboard/Outboard or sterndrive in salt water long term is a LOT of work, been there, doing it for 11 seasons worth and the next boat will be an OUTBOARD. For sure.

Highlights on what to expect? Scraping barnacles, spraying/brushing antifouling paint, that does not really work well in salt, so you will get to do it again in 3 months, then if the bellows leaks, you get to have the gimble bearing and ujoints replaced, then, when the risers clog up and overheat the engine, you get to put in new manifolds/risers, etc, and on it goes. If you are in a salt water region and are going to trailer or dry store the boat they are not that bad, but for a boat staying in the water, the OB boat will cost more up front maybe but the yearly maintenance will be lower and much less time consuming. I have been able to make mine last by staying ahead of it and doing all the maintenance, but it is work and if you can't do it yourself it will COST you. A LOT......

A friend of mine on the west coast replaced both of his drives with Ocean X drives in Washington for 32K. The only bad thing with the replacement is that you don't get to truly use all the features the drives have to offer. The oil sensors and a few other features do not connect to the ecm module. Unless you have that kind of coin, like Lou said above.....run like hell.

Ocean X and the XDP drives are NOT the same drive. Not even close.

Honestly I can only imagine what that drive and transom mount look like after that long in salt water, even if painted with anti fouling. The only ones that worked a damn were the tin based ones that have been outlawed for years. I bet the minute you started it up it would overheat because there are probably barnacles clogging all the water intakes on the drive. I have even had them growing INSIDE the water passage in the drive. Here my mechanic has advised splitting the drive every 2 seasons to clean out the inside growth. It eventually will close down that water passage under the tube that transfers water from the lower to the upper unit. I finally had to rip out that water screen the Cobras had inside the lower so I can rod out the water intake holes during the season. Barnacles were growing on the screen on the inside and up in the water passage.

Its being offered for a low price because that drive has a rotten reputation and the boat is very neglected and probably is not in running condition now without a thorough cleaning (bottom drive transom mount water intakes even the folds of the bellows will have barnacles growing there).

Sorry Don, I didn't mean to say that he just pulled off the xdp's and slapped on a couple of Ocean x's. They had to replace the complete transom assembly's and Y pipes.
