I am stuck.
I removed the outdrive on my Wellcraft last fall, and I can't get it back on.
I replaced the bellows, and I fought with the outdrive for 3-4 hours and I can't get the darn thing back on.
I can get the u-joint started on the shaft, but then I can't get it any farther on.
I tried wiggling the u-joint back and forth and no luck.
I tried raising and lowering the back of the boat and no luck.

A little help would be great.

For future reference, way easier to pull the upper gear housing than the whole drive. Even in this case, better to separate them and then reinstall.

Bruce,

Thank you. I tried, without success to upload a picture or two. I will keep at it.
While I do appreciate your efforts to help me, that was not the answer I was looking for. I was hoping for something quick, easy and even fun. Would you be so kind as to re-shape reality and physics for me to make the world be what I would like it to be?

Seriously, I am somewhat hesitant to get in any deeper than I am, got any other ideas?

Thanks,

Wade

I generally stand my DP on the skeg with a block of wood under it, and have the trans in neutral. Make sure the steering helmet is up out of the way. I then reach in to the bellows with my right hand, wiggle the u-joint coupling onto the PDS shaft until it lines up (this is the much swearing point). you will have to use the left hand to pivot the drive forward or back. once you have the u-jount and PDS perfectly lined up and square, it will just slide in and smash your right hand (more swearing). then I button up the bellows, put in the pins, add the steering helmet pin and trim cylinder pins. then I fight with the exhaust bellows.

my guess is that the u-joint is a bit cocked and that is why its not sliding in on you.

there are drive installing tools that would help here.
