[Volvo Penta DP-C1]: backlash gear sensor trim

sorry for my bad English writing.

A technician has seen the gears of my trim sensors that are against the helmet.
For him, to be replaced. Although the sensors work perfectly for now, soon will no longer work.
Is there really a relationship that connects the gear down, the fact that the sensor will not work?
I saw the manual and the exploded drawings. If the auction were to go down so it would not be connected to the potentiometer. But it can get to that point?

The many elements (sleeves, o-rings, etc.), what really keeps the shaft into position?
The number 15?

To replace the parts number 15-16-17, I must remove the helmet from his home ?

Thank you all for any replies and sorry again for the bad English

Happy New Year

The gear usually sticks in the tube with no problem, if it were to come down and touch the helmet, it wouldn't hurt anything. It would still be connected to the sender.
If you want to replace those parts, just remove the upper gear box and swing the helmet out of the way. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095
You can then pull the gear wheel down. You would need to remove the sender first when you put the gear wheel back in to prevent damage and make it easier to line up the notch in the wheel shaft and the sender.

Look at pages 150 through 155 of the manual (the page numbers on the page, not in adobe acrobat)

Thanks Don for your reply. :)
Considering that I also have to review the trim piston seals, should I remove all the group.
Today a dear friend sent me some very detailed pictures and told me that the element that holds the gear is an o-ring in the middle of the shaft.

Another question:
a special tool (number 884978) for extract the piston pin trim (as shown on page 143 of the manual DP-c) works well or not?
As you can imagine, the space inside the engine compartment is not very wide and smooth.
I hope not to have to remove the pistons from the bracket, and I hope to open the front nuts for replacement of only the front oil seal

Thank you for all

I've have had poor luck with that tool. Tried it many times, and it works maybe one time out of 5 or 6. Normally I end up pulling the engine, and transom shield and using a slide hammer screwed into the center of the pin to remove it, along with some heat.
I also only worked on salt water boats that had corroded cylinders that failed.
If your boat was only used in fresh water, there is a good chance it will work. The other thing is the cylinder itself. If it's corroded salt water, the chances of getting it apart at all are low.

the boat did 10 years at sea. then another 8 in fresh water.
It has no major flaws of corrosion from salt air, it has someone to galvanic currents: the previous owner has installed zinc anodes while the boat was in fresh water, instead of the correct magnesium anodes. This as you can imagine, did not help to prevent any galvanic current. But overall it is in excellent condition.

I know that is difficult to understand from simple picture, but you the place anyway, thank you again.

The 10 years at sea (in salt water) shows. I'm not going to give you a lot of false hope, you will probably have problems, lots of corrosion seen in that first picture.
