Volvo Penta DP-D Sterndrive problem

I have a 1994 Volvo Penta DP-D Sterndirve. Service provider for winterization stated that many metal fillings were present in my gear lube when he changed it this fall. Contacted several Volvo Penta authorized repair places, but none will touch this old sterndrive due to "specialty tools needed" and "shimming" concerns. Most said they no longer paid to have their technicians trained on these old units and do not have the tools. One authorized repair shop said that DP-D was great outdrive and my choices were to change gear lube alot, (monthly), and maybe it will last; or complete replacement of the sterndrive. Does anyone have any experiences or recommendations to share? Thank you in advance for any input or help.

I know of a great place in Ketchikan, Alaska to get it rebuilt.

Thanks for the note about a good repair place in Alaska. Unfortunately, I live in Iowa. But thanks anyway.

See, now people know what country and state you live in, maybe you could narrow it down some more.
