volvo penta dp outdrive gear box questions

Ok it began with me dropping a engine I rebuilt back in and when I was rotating the crank with the crank nut adjusting my valves it was really hard to turn and once I stopped the momentum to adjust that set of values I would have to turn it backwards then forward to get it to move again. After several times of this I sheared of the crank nut. So I guess I had a bad u joint so I removed the gear box and the u joints look good to me but I can't get them to turn with my hands at the bottom where it connects to the gear box. Is that normal? I'm about to tear into it any tips would be great

Did you have your spark plugs out while turning the engine?

I see something caused the joint to hit this Allen screw
