Hi all,

I was running my engine (454) at idle in neutral, boat on the trailer, ear muffs attached, when the engine suddenly stopped. Engine was locked up.

To cut a long story short, I found the problem was in the drive. Removed the drive, separated the lower and upper units. Lower unit seems to be ok, upper unit was locked up. As of now the upper unit will only rotate counter clockwise (viewed from the front of the engine) the engine rotates clockwise. I was having difficulty shifting in and out of gear at times while under power prior to this incident. I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

I would say complete dissassembly of the drive, both upper and lower is in order. Did you check the lower unit for metal? I would bet there is some in it as well. That's why I say to disassemble both.

Thanks. Under normal circumstances should I be able to rotate the drive by hand in either direction? As I said before ccw is it right now, which with regard to the engine is incorrect.

I am assuming from your post that you have the upper removed from the lower. Turning the input shaft (ujoint shaft) should turn both directions when in neutral. When put in forward or neutral, the vertical shaft is engaged. Should still turn, but you should feel a bit more resistance.
