Volvo Penta DPS drive questions

Hi all,
I have a 2005 Four Winns Funship 224 5.0L GXI-G with a Penta drive labelled DPS and 3883609 which I cross-referenced at this link to be a DPS-A drive if that's accurate...

I have a workshop manual for DPS drives (not DPS-A specifically) and also referred to the manual linked in the VP section here which appear to be identical as far as I can tell...

However, when I pulled my drive off for annual inspection/maintenance for the first time (previously maintained by a shop each year and now I wanted to take it on myself), I see some differences which I cannot seem to find literature describing. Note the difference in the seal on the transom housing. It goes around what appears to be the exhaust and water pump passages. Also, the trim cylinders are retained by a cotter pin instead of the e-clip described in the manual. Most notably, there is no zerk fitting on the transom housing or anywhere I can see for greasing the gimbal bearing so I'm under the presumption that this version came with a sealed bearing. U-joints are also wihout zerks.

I pulled it apart and noted that everything looks clean inside the drive area and well greased. No water inside. Bellows seem like new with no cracks.

Could someone help me confirm if this is a DPS-A drive or otherwise? Is there a link to a manual for mine?

And is there anything I need to look out for outside of what's mentioned in the DPS manual linked above? I just wanted to inspect/grease gimbal bearing, inspect bellows, grease U-joints, grease driveshaft splines, align drive and replace the sterndrive lube. I've done everything so far short of the drive lube change (awaiting tool for inner prop) and gimbal/U-joint grease since no zerks exist.

And for my piece of mind... how does the bellow seal to the drive at the pinion bearing carrier? Manual says to apply coat of 828250 grease at the tapered end, but I'm wondering how the seal is made with those 4 semi-circular indents in the perimeter? I see the water/scum line on the pinion bearing carrier so water appears to not getting past there, but hard to see if it seals on the perimeter or butts up at the end...just don't want to end up with water in the drive!! TIA

Your drive looks like mine which is a DPS-A. I`d recommend adding a little more grease on the nose of that drive but before I did that, I would clean up everything really good cleaning.

What do you do with the odd 2 part seal between the drive and transom housing? Mine looked like it been stuffed with an off white grease - like petroleum jelly. Is greasing it recommended or install dry?

I like to coat mine with the same blue grease you used on the nose. It helps keep it in place while reassembling the unit. I also smear the same grease on all touching mating surfaces between the drive pieces. It makes it much easier to pull apart next time.

Thanks. Is the grease on the nose mainly just for assembly/removal ease? And the sealing between the nose and bellows is basically achieved by a press fit between the two from the nuts that secure the drive to the transom housing?

Essentially yes, but I`d like to think that the grease can/could act as an extra "gasket" just in case you don't get a perfect fit between the rubber ring of the bellows and the aluminum nose.

OK, I was thinking the same which is a bummer now that I'm looking at how the nose of the drive and bellows interface... I already slapped them back together and now I want to go and pull it apart again to add more grease to the nose. I had initially thought it was sealing around the perimeter, but after closer thought it dawned on me that it was sealing on the butt end of the two components. Got a short window as the boat goes in tomorrow, but think it's best to pull it apart quickly to add some more grease.

Pulled it apart and greased everything up real well. Back together last night and launched it this morning in time for some nice weather.
