Volvo Penta Dual Prop size ?

I have a 21Ft Chaparral with the 5.7L GL Volvo Penta with the dual prop outdrive. I currently have B5 props on it but can only turn 4200 rpm and am getting up to 46 mph. I am new to dual prop outdrives so I'm not sure about prop sizes and series. I would think I would need to go down a pitch but not sure if I should be going to a B4 or going to a different series such C series any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
John

Re: Volvo Penta Dual Prop size ?

What year is your boat? I am thinking it has a DP-A or similar (white) drive? Are you sure it is a B5 set? What altitude do you run at?

My gut feel is to not go lower than the B5 set. Most boats this size came with the B7's I think.

Your numbers sound pretty close to ideal actually when considering that the tach accuracy may be off some. If you go to a B4 set the holeshot may be better and your top rpm's about 200 higher but you would not gain any top speed in my estimation.

What are you wanting to accomplish? Stay on plane at lower speeds? Pull towables better when loaded down? Or are you just worried about lugging the engine? Is the boat loaded down when you get those numbers?

My 22 foot Cuddy gets 46mph with 4400-4500 rpms with B5's. It is a VP 570 which is fundamentally the same as AQ271C, a 5.7 4bbl with 275hp at the crank, not sure what it converts to at the prop shaft but I guess 230-240. It will hit 45 even if loaded up.

By the way, the reason I asked if you are sure you have a B5 set is because when I compare your numbers to mine yours shows that a slightly higher pitch is in play, like a B6. B5's are about a 23 pitch, B6's a 25, B7's a 27.

Mine came with B7's but the B5's work much better for us as we frequented a small lake and use it primarily for tubing, not much day trip cruising as it only took 5 minutes to get across the lake!

The C series are stainless steel, and are roughly the same pitch as the B series numbers.

I have a 1994 2130 ss. The motor is a 2002. When I did the test I was at 1000' elevation but will be using it about half the time at lake Powell about 3300 elevation. I will be pulling wake boarders and tubes. The test was 3 people no hear 1/2 tank of fuel. I will be installing wakeboard tower and speakers etc so I will add maybe 200 lbs to the boat. The props day B. the tach does have me thinking because when I test drove it the first time it was showing 5200 rpm and the same speed and to me it didn't sound like it was overeving I have had a lot of boats and can normally tell be the sound.
Thanks for your response

Great, but what outdrive do you have? In 94, Volvo used several different drives, and year of the boat doesn't mean year of your drive.

John,

It would be best to get an accurate RPM reading before proceeding. Also accurate MPH. By GPS mine shows 45-46 when the speedo shows 48 sometimes.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. I live on northern AZ so I am About 100 miles from the nearest lake so I think I will install everything on my boat and then go down and try again and get correct rpm and mph readings. It will probably be 2 or 3 weeks before I can get back down there when I do I will let you know what I come up with.
Thanks again

HELP! I have a 1989 Cruisers Barnegat 2530, AQ271C V8 5.7 litre petrol engine, alleged WOT 4,600 rpm.Sterndrive DP290
Boat is 25FT and 4,400 lbs unladen. At present it has A6 props which I believe may well be wrong and more suited to diesel craft. Last time out only revved to 3,500 and 25 knots and very slow getting on the plane.
Please can anyone advise the correct prop - really to get on the plane quickly and conserve fuel (?1.35 per litre in UK)
Any help much appreciated

erikapeterg, it would be best for you to start a new thread of your own.

One of the things we will need is the drive ratio.

Is the 290DP from another boat that was a diesel? Or is it the original for this boat, and someone just decided to use the A series props? The reason I am asking this is that diesel drive ratios are different.
