Volvo Penta Engine ID?

I have searched and searched for the answer to this question, so here it goes.

Several months ago, I came into ownership of a 1995 Regal Valanti SE 176. It has a 3.0L Volvo Penta, which I assumed had a blown, locked up engine. Upon slow breakdown, and on and off tinkering, we got the thing to turn over. My problem is that I do not know which 3.0L Volvo I have. I know there should be a metal tag on the engine, and I also know there should be a decal somewhere also. This is the same boat that I was wanting to franken-motor on a while back, but turned down that deal. The previous owner has informed me that they had a new engine installed, but the boat never saw water after that. I suspect it was ran in the yard, minus water, because the head gasket had indeed failed. Got the head straightened out at a head shop locally, and now its to replace gaskets from the breakdown. But I need to know which 3.0 I have, or if that is relevant as far as gaskets are concerned. I'm looking to go ahead and replace them all around, but I don't wanna buy a manifold gasket for a 3.0LX if it won't fit my engine.

Any help? I've looked for this decal and tag, and cannot find the thing anywhere. I can see numbers on the block, but after a search those don't do me any good. I cannot see how a gasket could be TOO model specific, but then again I'm new to the boating world.

Re: Volvo Penta Engine ID?

Bump. I have looked at gasket sets, and all I can find is sets made by Sierra. I've read about Sierra parts, and wouldn't mind using Sierra stuff for most things, but I'm not willing to risk buying a head gasket that isn't metal (According to reviews on Head Gasket kit @ iboats). I've searched high and low, and it's difficult to find anything when you don't know where to start anyways. As I said, I've looked for the riveted metal tag, but can't find it. And I have no clue where the other decal is. Someone please help, ready to get this thing going and get her on the lake.

Once an engine has been changed, it's really difficult to say what all was changed. Just the block and head, or every? Manifold, ignition, alternator, fuel pump, carb.
Assuming for a minute that just the block and head were changed, and a like engine installed, you would have an HU model (Code for 95) in the original model number. Here is the OEM parts catalogs for that engine. http://www.volvopentastore.com/Mari...on_id.367582903--store_id.366--view_id.765083

One thing you might try is posting any numbers from the outdrive and/or the transom shield to help determine the actual year. The spec numbers changed each year, but there isn't really any way to use them for parts look up or id except for a list in the service manuals of what is covered for each year.

all I have at the moment is outdrive sx-a. I'll be able to get more later this evening, and will include pics. I know I can get the (serial?) number off the side of the block, if that would help.

EDIT: I should also reiterate that my main concern does not necessarily lie with identifying the engine. I know it's a 3.0. I really need to know if gaskets are.... universal? I don't know how to word it, but I can't seem to find a set for a volvo penta. They all say OMC/Merc, or some just say 3.0 Chevy marine. Sorry for being such a noob, but I am just lost.
