Volvo Penta Engine Knocking After Re-Installing Distributor

Hello, I have a 97 volvo penta 4.3 GL with SX cobra outdrive. I recently replaced the intake manifold gasket, and while putting the distributor back in (I did mark it to the best of my ability to put it back in the same position) I feel that I may have done so incorrectly and now the timing is severely off. After I started the engine you can hear a distinct knocking coming from the engine(and gets faster with higher RPM's). My question is would a horribly timed engine cause this knocking issue? Also I should mention that the reason I replaced the gasket was because it was leaking water into the oil, so I drained all of the oil and it sat for 3 days without oil before I got the gasket and did the re-installation and put oil in. I am worried that maybe one of the valves rusted closed or something worse. Any help from you experienced boaters would be greatly appreciated!

You have to re time your engine whenever you remove the distributor.

You likely have the Delco Voyager distributor so you just have to put it into base mode and time it to spec.

Not saying that timing is your issue but it needs to be checked.

Out of curiosity, what made you determine it was the intake gasket causing the water to get into the oil?

if the distributor isnt set right, and not engaging the oil pump drive, you can damage the motor

do you have good oil pressure?

next, timing needs to be checked.
