First a little history. 1996 Glastron 21.5 Anniversary Special Bowrider.

Ran boat with bad impeller. It overheated to the point where I could smell paint burning (or something else). Engine shutdown (built-in protection). Had impeller replaced. Ran boat and noticed engine noise like a rocker arm or valve noise. Had valves tightened. Timing reset. Boat runs fine except when throttled full for a hole shot I get noises from the engine which sound something like noisy valves or engine knock. This is only noticeable with hard throttling. Easy gradual throttling does not produce the sound. Mechanic thinks it is low octane gas or detonation problem. Never had this problem befrore as boat runs fine on regular gas. Any ideas? Is it okay to run the engine anyway? Thanks for your help.

Might help to tell us what engine you have.

If you scored your bearings, it would show up as low oil pressure. How does that look? did you do a compression check? Between those two, you should get an idea if the "noise" is bad... or very bad.

Engine is a 5.7 GM with fuel injection. Oil pressure appears normal. Didn't do compression check but boat still has great power.

Re: Volvo Penta engine noise

Since you have FI, I'd suggest you take it to someone who can scan it and make sure everything is working ok on that end. If the noise wasn't there before, you kinda need to find out what it is. Under extreme heat, you could even deform the pistons and/or cylinders. Under load, you may be hearing a little piston slap. What kind of temps did you run this up to?

Hi,
?Engine shutdown (built-in protection).?
No this engine doesn?t have a shutdown mode.
It quit because it got way too hot.
Might want to check or replace riser gaskets and the rubber tubes in the exhaust system.

Okay. Now the bad news. The oil is milky, a sign of water in engine. Ouch!
Engine starts and runs fairly well though a bit rough at idle. Yes it got way too hot and now I have to pay the fiddler. What do you think it might be?

Can I run it like this?
For how long?
Know any good marine mechanics in the Pittsburgh, PA area?
Please help.
Thanks.

motor is shot, you could rebuild it, might be something easy, or might be totalled, i did the same thing in a 454, ran it cause it still ran, then it grenaded...

sorry to say, but its cooked... but most likely its saveable... DONT RUN IT!!! it could be as easy as a bad head gasket, or a cracked head...

if your mechanically inclined do a compression test, it will tell you about everything you want to start with... let us know..

220 running is HIGH and 275 is just retarted high...

might be as simple as a warped head..

Re: Volvo Penta engine noise

Riser gaskets going bad after a overheat is a common cause of water in the oil.
Can I run it like this? ---- only at low speed/no load to get the oil changed.
For how long? ------ enough to warm the oil.
Know any good marine mechanics in the Pittsburgh, PA area? ------ sorry I don't know any.
Might be best to find a Volvo Penta dealer in your area ASAP, check Volvos web site to find one.

Thank you for your reply. The second mechanic I took it to, (the first one was an idiot), told me it was okay to run it as the noise I was hearing was just a "detonation" noise. Obviously another idiot, as I then took it to the Aspinwall Marina on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh. At last, a knowledgeable and intelligent mechanic did a compression test on all the cylinders and determined that two cylinders had below normal compression. Further investigation revealed a blown head gasket. The heads were found to have very little warp - not enough to machine or replace. Everything else seems to check out. He is ordering new parts from Volvo and will make it right for a fair price. I made a series of mistakes. I took the boat to idiot number one who did not check the brakes as I had instructed him to do, instead he changed the oil (?) tried to replace the fuel filter but since he didn't have a new one in stock and since he was going away on vacation that day, put the old one back after he lost the (O ring). After discovering the (O ring) in the bilge I bought another filter and installed it in the boat. The second idiot fixed the impellor correctly and also the brakes on the trailer but erroneously assessed the engine problem and said it would be okay to run the boat. The third mechanic I took the boat to wasn't in that day fortunately, and the fourth and last one which I should have taken it to in the first place will hopefully make it right. He dropped the oil pan and said that there was very little water in the oil. So I thank all the members here who responded.

Moral of the story. First get some knowledge of boating maintenance and responsibilities. Second, take it to an established marina with lots of experience and references.

Thirdly, don't argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Schultzz

Unfortunately this isn't an isolated incident or unique story... always ask around to find a good mechanic, and get a second opinion if it's the first time you've used a given shop.

Even then, get a written estimate. If they won't give you that, walk away.
