I'm trying to diagnose the trouble with bleed down on my outdrive. 1989 Sunrunner aq151c/290 VP. To check oil level in trim motor, do I leave filler cap loose to cycle up and down to purge air after topping off? Anyone🙂

if your out drive oil level is dropping, you have a leak.

some of the common places to leak are prop shaft seals, upper transmission shift shaft area and input shaft.

you are pulling the drive (or at least the upper trans) every year to inspect the u-joints and bellows, correct?

if water got in the u-joint bellows, it will have rusted the input shaft near the seal which eats the seal...... then it leaks gear oil filling the bellows.

His T@T is the problem.
It uses the Prestolite reservoir and motor.
I believe it needs to be down when filling.
Then tighten the cap, cycle it.

Still leaking down?
There are 2 very tiny seals in the very bottom of the pump part of the motor.
The following link covers the repair of the valves.
The pump part. There is NOTHINNG in the pump itself that you can fix or tinker with.
DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING ON THE PUMP, or you'll be buying an $8-900 pump.
The valves can be replaced but you can screw them up so be real careful.

the 290's were coupled with the oildyne tilt pumps.
