I have fourwinns 190 horizon. Engine cranks but will not start. Took out boat for 1st time and it ran slugish for 30 minutes. Would not go full throttle, maxed out at 2000 rpms. Finally it opened up ran good. Thought just some old gas, varnished up, but cleared out and all is good. Next weekend it will crank, but never fires up.
I tried.a new fuel filter, put hose to fuel pump in a gas tank to rule out bad gas.
I put a plug on the block and could see a yellow spark. The battery is new this year.
I took distributor off and lightly sanded contacts, they looked ok, not really corroded.
Do i need to have water muffs on intake to run when i am testing.

Please help, thanks.

Howdy

Yes you need muffs on. Even if it doesn't start your putting wear on the impeller, and if it does start you will burn it up in seconds.

Yellow spark is not very good, you need a blue or white
When the throttle is pumped do you see gas squirt down the throat of the carb?

So if i need a better spark what needs replacing, distibutor cap and rotor, or something else, read some posts about a solenoid or ignition coil. Is the ignition coil where the wire goes to center of distributor cap.. The plug i pulled and put on the manifold looked clean. I pulled the stainless fuel line off the pump that goes to injectors and gas was coming out when i turned the key.. the engine will not crank if i take the throttle out of nuetral,

What motor do you have the model number?

the engine will not crank if i take the throttle out of neutral,

The reason it will not crank is because there is a neutral safety switch in the handle or shift plate. It keeps the motor from being started in gear. The throttle handle should have a button on the side which is depressed and then the lever can be moved while it stays in neutral.

Being fuel injected moving the throttle much more then 1/2 can cause the injectors to stop firing.

Out of town tonight will try tomorrow, what about a poor spark fix.

Even with weak spark it should run but not that well. Pour spark is from plug wires, coil, points and condenser and plugs. Can be anyone of them or all, just depends on what has issues

OK, I tried the full throttle start. I found the button on the pivot of the handle. Crank but no start.

So If I want to guess spark is poor, anyone got a part number for a coil, cap and rotor to fix starting.

Thanks,

i will pick up a distributor cap, rotor, and ignition coil at local auto parts store and give them a try. I will also try the 1/4 throttle start up.

I put the coil on first and it didn't help. Put on new rotor and cap and it is running. Although now the alternator bearings went out and it was smoking . Can I get a standard alternator from auto parts store or do I need a Marine one?

Thanks,

---- NO ---- has to be marine. You can rebuild the one you have, parts are mostly easy enough to find

Well the alternator spins really easy, but the belt is really worn out. The pulleys are rusty looking on the alternator and main idler pulley. I read in another thread about pitted up rusty pulleys eating belts. Should I just sand the pulleys down and that will solve my belt smoking and squealling problem.

Thanks
