Volvo Penta or Sierra? Need circulating water pump

Good Morning,.

My circulating pump on my 2000 7.4 GI PEFS (SN:4012007348) is leaking water through the lower weep hole. I confirmed this after I removed the serpentine belt and pulley.

My question is there a significant quality difference between genuine Volvo Penta parts, and aftermarket Sierra?

Also is there a difference between an automotive pump and a marine?

Thanks in advance!

Yes on both questions.
I have used 3 Sierra water pumps on customers boats in the past 3 years. 2 of the 3 leaked within a few months.
Marine pumps have heavier duty bearings and seal materials than automotive.

My manual also states that marine pumps utilize more stainless steel components than automotive styles. I just replaced mine with a sierra, so I guess we'll see. It was $85 vs $365, so I guess we'll see.

Thanks Don, and Jamie...

iboats has the genuine Volvo Penta pump for $182, where did you get a price of $365? Are you sure you're not talking about the raw water pump?

You are right, it's about $100 more, not sure where I got the 365 from. If Don sees the Sierras fail, I'd suck it up and go with the Volvo. I'll eventually learn my lesson buying this aftermarket crap, haha. Hopefully my raw water, circulating pump, and my fuel pump don't decide to fail at the same time!
