Hi guys. I am having trouble with my 1986 5ltr 225hp Volvo Penta (GM Block)
This is what happens. I will go up to my boat after a week of not driving it, start it up, take off with it and it runs great. After I stop somewhere for a while and try to get up and going again It chokes up and runs horrible. The RPM gauge jumps up and down 500 RPM. No one has been able to figure out what this problem is. Please HELP!!!

Do you still have the rev limiter (little black box mounted to transom, connected to coil with black wire, grey wire, and red wire). If so, disconnect it.

What condition is your cap and rotor?

Pull the trapezoidal plug and look for corrosion.

If you still have problems, jump the ignition by connecting the coil + to battery plus. If the problem goes away, you have a wiring issue ( bad connection, bad switch, etc). If problem persists with coil jumpered, could be distributor module. If that is case, new distributor is $300, new module is $550 ( get new distributor at that point)

They put a rev limiter on the 1986?
Some things you can try.
Try disconnecting the tach.
Check the coil.Too hot to touch?
Water in the fuel?
Dirty filter?
Dist. cap cracked, loose?
The advance springs rusted or loose?

Thanks for the reply.
Cap and rotor replaced, filters are new, no water in fuel, coil is very hot to the touch, mechanic wire brushed all connections, he also said voltage at the coil drops to 2.8 at times? Manual points were replaced 7 years ago to electronic points,
I will try jumping the ignition and disconnect the rev limiter if I have one? and see where that takes me. If it is a bad connection where would be the best place to start looking? where is trapezoidal plug?

Thanks for help! I will keep you posted on my progress.

What's the voltage into the coil?
Should be about 9v.
If it so hot you can't keep your fingers on it then it's probably bad.

trapezoidal plug is the connector on the engine wiring harness, just about even with the back of the starboard head. may have a black rubber boot over it. kind of a crappy plug, and a known corrosion area.
