ok my buddy just bought a 1986 glastron with a aq125b volvo and a 270 outdrive. when he got it the cam was out of it. so we took the head off nad replaced it with another. now we cant get it to start. we have timed it three time with no luck. we have spark and fuel. we are going to do a compression test tomorrow to see if the rings are shot. if we have good compression what else could it be? we are getting no where on our own.

Re: volvo penta question.

Lots of variables on those motors. First get the timing belt on right, then get the distributor in right. The compression test is an easy check. Let us know what you find.

Here are your answer , I just replace the timing belt , your need to align all
the mark per manual . Follow these steps it get your closer where your got
to be .

#1 Cylinder to top dead center

Looking at the distributor cap from the front of the engine number 1 should be at about the 7 o'clock postion, provided no one has changed anything from original. You can find #1 by bringing #1 cylinder to top dead center, remove distributer cap and see where rotor in pointing. That will be where the #1 wire goes.

Trick

Anyhow, yes, find TDC and set it so the rotor points to #1, but it has to be TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke.

Easiest thing to do is pull the plugs (your pulling one anyhow, make it easier byt removing the other 3) and turn then engine with a big socket while you have some paper towels pressed into the #1 plug.

When it pops out you are on the Compression stroke.
