volvo penta Rochester carburetor issue

hi guys
i'm new in the boat world, actually this is my fir st boat (1986 bayliner capri with a 5.0l volvo penta engine). The boat was sitting for a while in storage, i got the engine running, but only when i'm poring gas straight in the carburetor. And than stops. Gas pump works, i have gas all the way to the carburetor, but nothing beyond that. I tried to take it apart, but the upper part will not come off.....
Please advise, and thanks in advance.

When you pump the throttle, do you see a mist or spray of fuel coming from down the throat? When you say the upper part won't come off - what component are you talking about?
