Volvo Penta starts the stalls

So, the long version of the story. I got a good deal on a 2002 Seaswirl Striper 2601 WA. I love the boat, but the Volvo-Penta 5.0 gxi needed a repower. We bought a new 5.7 block and had a mechanic use all the old parts to reassemble the engine. The engine ran well under 2000 rpm’s but sputtered at higher rpm’s. So we sent in the ECU/ECM to get re-flashed for a 5.7 engine. The engine ran well at idle and then 20 minutes into giving her a test run the engine just stopped. Made it back to the slip on the kicker.

After research we decided it was a fuel problem, so we replaced the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and tested her out on fresh gas from an external tank. We thought we should keep idling it until all the engine parts had fresh gas and the injectors were cleaned. Now the engine will start fine and idle perfectly for about 20 seconds then just stop. After doing this a few times, the engine starts grinding metal on metal like its not getting oil so we stopped doing that. If anyone wants to take a look and listen here is a lick to a YouTube video: https://youtu.be/hLoo3v4-j0c

So, now I’m thinking it is a problem some sensor. I have traced wiring, checked fuses and inspected the map sensor. (Ordered to wrong replacement) Also ordered a new starter relay Volvo Penta Starter Relay.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be great. I wish I could just call a mechanic to fix it, but I live in way up in Northern California and we just don’t have that many marine mechanics in our area and the good ones are all booked for the next three months. Of course another reason I am doing it myself is to learn the engine better and be able to fix things in case of emergency out on the ocean.

Any thoughts, insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hearing noise but not like grinding metal.
I hear the fuel pumps running when the motor stops, but wonder if they were running when the motor started to stop?

Can you put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail?

A GXI what?
Do they stay that way during the complete run thru shut off time?

If so connect volt meter to + side of coil and see if power is interrupted

If power remains, remove, clean contacts and then reinstall crank shaft position sensor

Has the distributor cap been changed?

The distributor cap is new.

Thank you for the tip. I will be checking the coil for power interruption when I get back to the bost this week.
