I am having problems with my 09 glastron gt205 with a volvo penta sx-a outdrive shifting, when the boat is in the water it will shift into forward with a thud if the boat is already moving forward it's not as bad but if the boat is stationary like for example sitting in neutral or comming from reverse it hits a lot harder, sometimes it will not go into forward at all and I have to mess with it for awhile, I've read that some thuds are normal but this seems to be a little worse than what could be considered normal, when going into reverse it does it all the time no matter what, I've adjusted the shift cable and it's about adjusted all the way, on my dipstick there are no markings on the flat part but when I check it the level is about 3/4 of the way up the dip stick is this normal level, the volvo dealer where the boat was bought has no idea what to do, just lookin for some opinions or experiences with this issue?

Find a new Volvo dealer, any good dealer knows exactly what to do. What are you doing when you "mess with it"? The correct lube level is anywhere in the flat part. What type of lube are you using, I see the problem a few times a year when people don't use Volvo lube. Don't understand when you say "adjusted all the way" needs to be adjusted so you get full engagement of both forward and reverse. If you can't get that it's a bad cable or control box. Sounds like your idle speed is too high, that will cause troubles with cone clutch shifting.

I agree, sounds a lot like a high idle speed causing hard shifting. And that's a very basic concept for a mechanic to understand so I would find a new one as well.

I was there a few years ago with my sx-a drive as well. Get the idle speed (in the water, in forward gear) in between 550-650 rpm and see what that does for you.
