VOLVO PENTA SX-C was running fine then wasn't. Thought I heard a little gearing noise when it happened.

We were wakeboarding all day and went for the last pull and nothing, engine revved and I thought I heard a gearing zing.

Next day I adjusted the shift cable and had the prop spinning out of the water, but put it in the water and would barely spin.... then nothing.

Pulled the selector plate and things look OK, but there's definitely a disconnect between the drive and the motor.

Going to pull the outdrive tomorrow I'm guessing.

I have to say, I bought the boat two months ago and have been running it fairly hard. It sounded like a small helicopter at idle, so I knew stuff was worn out in the drivetrain. I'm guessing it's something in the U- joint drive shaft assembly. The gimbal bearing was also making some noise before this.

Any input or ideas from the forum would be greatly appreciated.

Update
Pulled the outdrive.
1) bellow is shot
2) gimbal bearing is rusted
3) no splines left in the coupler
4) there wasn't a gasket between the drive and housing. 😲

See attached photos below

Does anyone know if you have to pull the motor to replace the coupler? Any advice, tips or experience is greatly appreciated.

With the engine out of the way it will be easier to drive the gimbal bearing out from the inside. A large punch with a suitable b F h.

motor has to be lifted up enough to remove the flywhel rear housing
Thank you sir. After inspecting with my cousin we figured we had to.

That's great to know. I was looking at the puller pushers and wondering if I could get it out from behind.

Looks like I'll be getting the alignment tool though.

So far I need a coupler, greasable gimble bearing and bellows kit w/ gaskets and the alignment tool....+ few other gaskets. I'm sure I'm probably missing some things I'll need.

Looks like I might be replacing the drive shaft if I can find just the input at a decent price. Otherwise it was $400+ for the whole assembly
