Just purchased our first stern drive and have a few questions.

Its a 2004 VP 5.0GL-D 220hp with a 2 bbl Holley carb and SX outdrive. Serial is: 4012100510

When shifting into forward its very smooth, barely felt at all. When shifting into reverse its more of a bang and not smooth at all. If you shift into forward or reverse (on the trailer) the prop can still be turned (one way only) but not easily, its not slipping during boating however. Normal Operation?

When idling, it appears pretty much all exhaust comes out from the bottom of the plate that mounts to the transom. On the trailer and muffs, all the water also comes out there. When you put it in gear (in water) you can then see at least some of the exhaust going through the prop. Normal Operation?

The motor runs very well but appears to be running a bit rich as every time I take the boat out the transom gets black stuff on it. From what I can tell there are plugs covering up the idle mixture screws located on the sides of the plate that the float bowl mounts to. What is the best procedure to remove these to gain access to the adjustments?

The trim range that is usable is very small compared to the outboard we came from. I would say its from all the way down to about 1/8 of the way up, much higher than this and the prop will slip. Prop is a Michigan 14 1/4 x 21 aluminum. The trim range I can use will take the boat from plowing at the nose to porposing with a normal load so I guess this is ok?

The trim is operated by a switch on the end of the shift lever and there are no additional switches for a beach range. The Faria trim gauge is only marked with markings at full down, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full up. Full down on the drive is barely above full down on the gauge. Coming from an outboard, I'm not used to watching out for u-joint damage. Is it ok to power the boat on the trailer with the trim at halfway up? At what position should engine not be running?

Any other advice in the operation/maintenance of this I/O is greatly appreciated. I do have a VP owners and shop manual.
