One quick question I have been through the procedures for removing and replacing the stern drive and it never mentions moving the control handle to forward gear before removing drive.

Now I have most of my experience on Mercruiser?s and you put the drive in fwd before removal.

Am I just missing something???? Do I need to put drive in FWD and then put it in Neutral like the producer states??

See below steps from procedure:

20. Rotate shift lever back to neutral detent position, then move
Remote control handle to its neutral detent position. Turn cube IN
or OUT until it aligns with center of bellcrank slot.

Drive S/N 4112051867

Re: Volvo Penta SX-M drive question

What it is talking about, is to put the gear change cable into it's middle position by moving the remote handle into what would be neutral.
Then at the drive end move the gear selector by hand into neutral, there are 3 dent positions neutral is the middle one.
Then the little brass cube that is threaded onto the end of the cable at the drive end should be screwed in or out to line up with the hole in the operating lever at the drive end.
Hope that helps.

Re: Volvo Penta SX-M drive question

Just make sure you remove the threaded brass cube from the throttle cable before attempting to pull the drive.
That little cube won't make it through the hole....and you'll be stuck.

And it doesn't matter what position the drive is in; I just leave mine in neutral anyway....

What does matter is when you put it back together, the throttle is in neutral, the drive is in neutral, and the cube is threaded back onto the cable in the same position, so everything works in Drive, N, Reverse....
