Post a picture of your engine. Also look on the port side and see if you have the serial and model number tag and post all the numbers on the tag you can find. I'm pretty sure your installer is feeding you a line of crap.
The tag is below the fuel injection pump and riveted to a cast pad.

the stripper we have is the 2600 it weights around 5500lbs and the guy installed the same motor on a 79skipjack 24 ft that weights more than the stripper we dont here the turbo winding so its going back to the installer tomorrow to figure out whats going on

I hope it is covered by the installer? Big bucks for a new turbo.

Re: volvo penta tmd40a acceleration problem

can any one tell me what gear ratio and prop size is needed for the 280 volvo outdrive for the tmd40a motor the boat i have is a 2000 seaswirl stripper2600 walkaround dryweight is 5500 then u got fuel and equipment because the prop andoutdrive i got on there i dont think is the right one the motor hits 3000rpms wot in water but the boat does not plain out and i have a feeling that its a prop or gear ratio problem theres a guy that has a 1979 topaz 24ft that weights the same as mine and he has the 130hp volvo diesel and his boat hit 20kts cruising and 24 kts wot so i would think that it should do the same to mine

It's supposed to have a 1.61:1 gear ratio. Prop size I couldn't tell you. But you might want to post your prop size question over in the Prop forum, you will probably get more help.

do u think the prop would be the cause of the boat not plaining out or do u think i could be the ratio

The Black smoke indicates overfueling or oil leak in turbo. The 2 psi boost sounds low however if the "2" reading is in BAR, then you have boost and overfueling/ oil leak. This could be from swinging too much prop or tightness in the drive line. However if the boost is indeed only 2 psi, then you turbo has an issue. Have you checked for oil pressure to the turbo? If the black smoke is from oil in turbo, the there are a couple of possible reasons. There are small piston ring like seals which contain the oil pressure for the bearings (oil float bushings), if these are gone you will get oil traces in either hot or cold side of the turbo. Enternal inspection of hot / cold side housings will tell you if oil is going through a turbo. If you have oil supply and no traces of oil in turbo, then look for restrictions to flow on the ehaust and air sides, such as gaskets with too small a hole. The other possibility may be turbo pop-off valve (if so fitted) is weak and not allowing the turbo to boost the pressure.

Re: volvo penta tmd40a acceleration problem

Depends on how much smoke. Thick black, if oil, would actually make good power. It would eat itself alive, but make good power until then. Typical, small oil issue would smoke blue.

To test, if not going to use the proper diagnostic procedures, I would be trying lower pitch props. If that works then I'd make gear ratio decisions after that.

While its just an assumption I would think your prop should be the same as his.
If it doesn't work then look at the engine.

e turbo problem is fixed the installer replaced the turbo the impeller inside had play so now the turbo is winding as normal now they are going to increase the size in prop and lower the pitch in it to see if it helps if it does then im thinking to go from a 1.61 to 1 ratio to a 2.3 to 1 ratio which should make a bigger difference

how is your boat running? one question did the installer had an extra turbo handy or he exange it from the skipjack you are talking about.
