i want to know how long is gimbal bearing housing from the botom where is bearing seat to the top where is mounted u-joint bellows.because i lost the measure-please can enyone help me

​i have rebuilt may volvo penta sx mlt transom sheild.a bore of gimbal bearing was broken and i welded a new ring on but i have no information how long must be in mm or inch. broken was in the end where is mounted u- joint below,because the owner of the boat not have gimbale bearing inside,whit this i made abaut 800miless with boat.i made a new hull for gimbal bearing and u-joint below in cnc machine but iv lost measure how long isbush. mlt is modell of transom shield a year 2003 with sx sterndrive and volvo 5.0 gxi-c engine.just one question i am new how can i put picture to side best regards tomas

I hope I understand you correctly, If the gimbal bearing is completely seated against it's flange there should be about 1&5/8 " to the edge. I measured my SX a couple of weeks ago. Dave-R

Ayuh,.... Measure how long/ thick the bearing is,...

You need enough of yer sleeve to fully support the bearing,....

The yoke rides, right behind the bearing, within a few thousandths of an inch,....

when i push joke through gimbal bearing how many space must be betwen in inch?because if the bearing is too tight the 2 o rings not going trought.tomas

If the o-rings won't go in??
Remove them and clean the grease from the grooves.
The old/dirty grease lifts the o-ring and makes it bigger causing them to stop at the edge of the bearing.

in the picture up is the old one bearing its like bearing but it is not.i found this one inside when i past abaut 800 miles trougt the sea.owner ho has this boat before me told me that change gimbal and all is serviced and ok.in my lucky at the end of the season everything broken and wather come in.before volvo have many years mercruiser and i know everithink abaut them and with volvo i teached again.at marine program you must never trust when told you all is ok and serviced,you must all to do yourself to be certained the boat and engine and transom are well prepared to season tomas

yes i puted together and its moving a bit left and right cca 0,20mm ithink the shaft was dameged because the owner before me never changed the gimbal

Ayuh,.... On yer input shaft that goes through the gimbal bearing, Aren't there 2 grooves in the shaft,..??

2 O-rings go in those two grooves to lock the inner race of the bearing to the shaft,.... Where the extra Air is,...

The O-rings need to be greased when pushing the shaft into the bearing,....

gimbal goes trought this two o rings with no problem but than gimbal have a lot of space over the shaft tomas

The shaft with the 2 "O" rings is NOT an interference fit and without the "O" rings should slide in easily. With the "O" rings fitted and a couple of drops of oil the shaft becomes a push fit. The "O" rings provide the friction to rotate the bearing.

i tried to put it together and its work nice and fully suported shaft and rotate the bearing.the shaft diameter is 43.55mm and inside the bearing is 43.80mm the mechanic told me that the tolerance betwen is ok.thanks for information tomas
