Can anyone advise best way to troubleshoot the trim motor/system for a 2001 5.0 l/O, Volvo Penta in a Four Winns Horizon 180. The guage has never been especially accurate so we listen for the trim motor sound and the hydrulic "stall" to know when the prop is up or down. Notice a different sound on the trim motor, but still managed to raise it. Now, nothing but a small "whining" noise. Ten amp fuse appears OK.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Volvo Penta Trim Motor

Personally I would find The spot on the trim motor where all the wires hook up too. You should see a blue and green that raises or drops the trim. There should also be a red and black wire which is your power and ground. Start by un screwing the red power wire and get a small jumper wire to test the motor. Hook 1 side of yor new wire to the spot where the previous red wire was connected and hook up the other side of the jumper to the positive of the battery. Then try it and see if it picks up the trim. If it works install a new power wire..
If a no go hook everything back up and now do the same test with blue or green wires to test the motor..
Good luck..

Having the same problem with 2001 Reinell 203, 5.0GL. Was working fine one day, no delay or lag. Then nothing the next day. I can hear the relays "click" when I engage the trim switch, but no action from the motor. The Volvo Penta authorized repair shop looked at it and said the motor needed to be replaced at approx. $680 plus labor. It is 11 years old, but only about 200 hours on the engine. I don't think they ran any tests other than taking a look and giving me their opinion.

I will also try the above test tomorrow, but wondering if my problem is possibly either the relays, or a 55amp fuse I read in another earlier thread from Don?

Thoughts? Appreciate the help.
