Volvo Penta Trim Pump Cover

I have just about read all of the sites forum posts on recommendations for repairing and replacing the infamous "white plug" leak. I have tried the M10 Set Screw with JB Weld (didn't hold). I did use an M10 pan head screw with an O-ring and loctite's marine epoxy, that is holding and haven't seen any leaks.

My question is; I have refilled the reservoir on the pump, all my local Volvo Penta dealers are out of stock of the Volvo Penta power trim fluid. I have called various marine shops and got "some" help in regards to an alternative, most of them have said Auto Matic Transmission Fluid, I followed up with another question asking if it mattered if it was Dexron, one guy said no it is only red because of a dye. So i went to a local auto parts store and bought Dexron 6, filled the pump in the down position worked the trim up/down and at the down I would top off the fluid level again. I did this repeatedly until I did not hearing any "gurgling" noise, at this point I figured all the air was bled out. I lowered the unit all the way down again and topped her off a last time.

My major question here is that I looked at the rams when i begin to notice (audibly) that the pump has reached its max down position. There is roughly about an inch to two inches of strut on the rams still visible, to make sure i wasn't losing my mind I went and checked the3 trim gauge and it is reading on about 3/4 down. I am concerned if I ckeep working this pump too much, its gonna quit on me.

Is there still possibly air in the system, and if so what is the best way to bleed it out?

Is the Dexron ATF too thick for this system, should I go with an ATF meant for a Ford, I should be able to find Quicksilver brand trim fluid, but is it really universal?

How much fluid should that pump/resevoir hold?

I am completely baffled on what is join on here, and I don't want to have to drop $$$$ to replace a cover that WAS leaking but no longer is.

Thanks in advance for the help

They don't bottom out completely.

As for the gauge that's a typical Volvo gauge. You should be happy that you have one that read something be weather it's right or not.:D
