Volvo Penta Trim Pump Upgrade

I have a 98 Volvo Penta SX-C drive that has a trim leak down problem. I have no external leakage and my trim cylinders are tight.

The trim pump that came with my unit is the older (OMC) "Stacked" pump (3854030 or 3855334 not sure which) The fluid level is fine. The replacement trim pump they want me to use is the new "Oildyne" reservoir w/cap design (3587079) which is a whole lot better.

My question is:
This new pump consists of a pump/motor/reservoir assembly with a motorwire lead and an electrical plug. Can I just install my trim hoses and plug the motor into the existing harness? or am I opening up a can of (costly) worms?

Please advise
Thanks!

Firstly you were not to know, but Don S passed away a few years back.

Secondly why are you thinking of replacing the pump unit? How have you determined that it is the pump at fault? It could be the pistons in the cylinders that have worn and passing fluid, or the valves in the pump unit that have a bit of debris caught in them.

New seals for the pistons are available on ebay much cheaper than the new pump

See here for valve body seal kit No.82 http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7749307-44-10430.aspx

I did not know Don s was no longer with us, thank you for that regrettable information.
.
I rebuilt my trim cylinders about 2 years ago.

I never liked the trim pump I have because it was a ***** to fill. The fill cap is located on the side of the unit and mounted on the inside of the transom, behind the engine. So it's always a mess trying to get a bottle of trim fluid back there in the first place.

I had this problem about a year ago, and it did indeed "correct" itself and started working normally.

At the time I chocked it up to a piece of debris in the pump check valve like you said. But its doing it again and I ran the boat a full day trying to dislodge anything in the system and it is still doing it. When running the boat I have keep "touching" the trim button to keep the drive trimmed up where I set it.

I read that changing out the older pump to the upgraded one usually solves the problem.
