Volvo Penta Trouble

We have had numerous problems with this motor. Its a 230b red block. Last year we put an electronic timing system in it and it seemed to be all better.

When we pulled it out this season the boat starts and runs well for about half an hour. After a while if you let it idle and then try to hit the gas the motor dies. It just doesn't seem like it wants to take the gas when you give it. We are not going full throttle. Usually clutch ahead will cause this to happen.

I'm not sure what the problem is now. It sounds like it's sucking in a lot of air. Like a whistling sound, but only after some time on the water.

Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

When was the last carb rebuild? The accelerator pump may not be working. Not a big deal. Have it gone through.

Or, could the gas be old or have water in it? Do you have a water seperating filter?

Re: Volvo Penta Trouble

The boat filled with water last year so I'm thinking that there may be water in the tank. I'm hesitant to pull all of the gas out of there because there is about 20 gallons and it certainly isn't cheap. I will probably end up flushing the tank sometime this week just wanted to get some opinions

You could run the boat on an external tank for testing purposes. Otherwise, flush the tank, sounds like it needs it. Then, install a water separating fuel filter.

Boating isn't cheap, ask me how I know...

your 230B should have a fuel/water separator. make sure you change it. I would also pull the carb off and rebuild it.

at $3.60 for fuel, are you really sweating over $72 worth of bad fuel? if the tank has water in it, that can be the source of your problem. you have to at least drain some fuel into a clear container and let it sit for a few hours. if it separates, you have a fuel issue.

engines dont run on water
