'01 Reinell 185 with an '00 Volvo Penta 4.3L 2 bbl.

The boat idles fine and runs fine until I shut it off and let it sit for awhile (1/2 hour or longer). When I go to restart, it sometimes will not restart.

Sometimes when it does start after sitting, it will act as if it is losing fuel once you get the boat running, on plane, and going for 30 seconds or so.
At that point, it will not restart again.

Usually letting it sit for 20 minutes or so will allow it to start again. Today that did not help. I eventually got it to start both time but I am unsure as to exactly what I did to make it start. First time was to move the throttle half way and it eventually started. Not sure what I did the second time.

Once I do get it to start, it runs great. Only have the problem once it sits.

Temps were in the mid-90's with water temps in the mid-70's.

Replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, and adjusted idle speed last year.

I've read through a bunch of threads but can't seem to find the same issue (not restarting and also bogging at speed once it does restart).

Any thoughts?

I'm not too far off from your problems. I have the mercruiser 165 4cyl. It will run perfectly from a cold start until I shut it down and let it sit. Then, when I do get it started again it will bog out or just stall every time I put it in gear. If it sits for a long period(I'm talking about 3 hours) it will run fine again until I shut it down. I cleaned all my breather tubes, vent lines, etc and took out the fuel pump/filter and cleaned everything. This boat sat for a long time so my next check is the tank and then carb. If those aren't dirty or don't have sediment in the tank then I have no idea what the problem is. I have also insulated the fuel line to check to see if I was getting vapor locked. That wasn't the case either. Anyone out there have any advice for either of us?

I would be looking at the Choke first. Cold start give the throttle one full push to set the choke. Warm start just crack the throttle open a little in neutral. See if it helps.

The more I think about this, I really believe it is a heat related issue. The first four weeks I had the boat out this did not happen. As soon as the ambient temperature hit the mid to upper 90's with water temp in the mid to upper 70's, viola!

I think I'll see what I can do in that regard (insulating fuel lines, etc.).

I would look at a leak down from the carb. I have seen alot of carbs leak and flood the engine when hot.

swcolorado...my apologies. I didn't realize I was "hijacking" your thread by stating my issues(I noticed this on some other threads). But either way, keep us updated on what you find out.

Not a problem Super Powers.

Here is what I am planning. Remember that this does NOT happen when ambient temperatures are in the 80s with water temp in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Please see the photos I've attached.

As you can see from the first photo, the fuel line touches the raw water outlet. This is the water after it is leaving the block. The fuel line is also right on top of the manifold.

The second photo are 4 of the 6 spark plugs after about 10 minutes of running after getting it started the last time. The two on the left are from the starboard side; the two on the right are from the port side. They look okay to me; maybe a touch on the lean side on the port side. May look a touch rich on the starboard side due to not running for very long after finally getting the thing restarted.

The last photo is a heat sleeve from O'Reilly auto parts. Part number 010403. It is manufactured by Design Engineering.

My plan is to bump up the idle mixture ever so slightly and encase the fuel lines in the heat sleeve and move it above the outlet raw water line to get it a bit further away from the manifold. If this does not work, I will post again. Otherwise the problem is fixed.

I'm posting this so that the next guy hopefully can benefit from it.

Re: Volvo Penta won't restart after sitting; stalls after sitting

i am having same sort of problem, stop to swim get back in starts idle out for a min while kiddos and wife get settled punch it runs out of gas. fuel filter half way empty out of gas. replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line, anti syphon fitting, drained tank took it apart vacuumed what lil trash was in there, sock looked good, fuel pump relay, and checked the tank vent. not sure whats next. thinking alt. might be the problem, fuel pump gets power from the alt. its charging, but the fuel pump runs off the light terminal, or its my ground? its like theres a hickup in power supply and the pump cant recoup befor stall. did you guys figure anything out?
