Volvo prop nut question

I have a Larson 290 with twin Volvo DP-SM out drives. To change the outdrive fluid you have to remove the duo props to get at the drain screw. After change the fluid and putting the props back on I was concerned about what kept the prop nuts in place since there was no castle nut with a carter pin nor a locking washer. I have since found out that Volvo uses a nylock type nut for both the inner and outer nuts. The best price I can find for these Volvo prop nuts are $30 per nut or $120 for 2 each to replace them. Does anyone know approximately how many times you can take these on and off before they are considered worn out? I am worried that the nuts went on too easy and could spin off and lose a prop

Re: Volvo prop nut question

If anyone knows how these type of prop nuts work please post a reply. I have got 4 new nuts and have never seen nylok nuts like these. They do not look like they would lock the nut on the shaft or that taking them on and off would wear them out. They have the nylon on the inner side of the nut rather than the outer side that is normally smaller than the shaft size. Do I need to change the old nuts just because they are taken off at least once a year to change the out drive fluid.

Re: Volvo prop nut question

That is a trick question. What does Volvo say is the correct answer. In the real world a nylock will hold through two or three normal uses before the friction is markedly reduced. I believe I posted before, if there is any question in your mind a couple of drops of blue locktite will have the same effect as a nylock. Red locktite will hold it on for ever, not a product for reuse type applications.

Not a trick question. Volvo will not answer any questions they just refer me to a dealer. Problem in this area there is no volvo dealer I trust, most have never worked on volvo because there are very few boats that have them around here which is why I look for help in this forum. I did not realize that locktite blue would hold like nylok which is what I will do instead of spending $120. Thanks for your help. Jerry

Re: Volvo prop nut question

I wanted to update this post to say that I pulled the nuts and used the blue lock tight on them. After looking closely at the new nuts they have a plastic ring inside them but I do not think they are nylock so I returned them.

Re: Volvo prop nut question

I have had my Bravo 3 nylock prop nuts off at least 10 times and have NEVER had a problem with them staying tight. Properly torqued, a prop nut will not back off. I have always thought those pins and silly tabbed washers are only on other drives to make them idiot proof.

Cotter Pins, Castle Nuts, and Tab Washers are not $120 a set. I would be careful about where the term "idiot" is applied in this comparison.
