Volvo Steering Fork, Small Shaft??

Hi all. I will have pics at some point, but in a nutshell, I took apart the steering section of my twin volvo drives. These drives do not match, nor do the transom plates. The transom plates are very similar looking.

One transom plate/steering fork is the standard Volvo 280.

The other is something different. The steering shaft, and therefore the transom plate bushing holders, are close to half an inch smaller in diameter. The steering fork is two piece, with the shaft bolting on to the fork with 4 allen head screws.

Can anyone identify the series of transom plate/steering fork I have?

I need to find a v-seal and bushings to fit the small fork shaft.

Thanks,

Chay

I'm gonna need pictures for sure. I've never seen steering fork with the shaft bolted on. Might also look for any number tags on the inside of the unknown transom plate.

Re: Volvo Steering Fork, Small Shaft??

Ok, here we go:

4401 is the transom shield with the small shaft

4403 is a comparison between the two steering forks. The large one, I'm told is a standard 280. The small one is?

4404 shows the helmets. The right hand one has a big hole...it takes the pin and two allen heads. The left one, small, takes a single allen 'plug'. The right bolts up to the transmission I think could be a SPa, the left, what I think is a 280.

4406 is a bit out of focus, but you can see the ends of the allen head screws poking up through the tapped plate/shaft.

4407 shows the bottom of the fork where the allen heads come from.

The diameter of the 280 (big) shaft is 1.41", and the ? small shaft is .987".

As always, any help is appreciated.

Never seen anything like that before. Will look through some of the older manuals.

Re: Volvo Steering Fork, Small Shaft??

I'm really not sure as it's been many years since I've seen something similar, but I seem to remember it was from an early AQ250.

Looks to me like one of your transom mounts might just be from an early AQ250 drive with the early steering fork without splines, where the fork has been replaced with the original replacement for those non splined forks.
I can't really remember, but I still seem to have some sort of memory of those old replacements for the non splined forks being a little different than the one in your pictures, but they went out of production years ago, so hard to tell.

Even worse would be if it's an Holman Moody, Eaton, Chrysler, etc built on one of the old Volvo drives. Since I don't live in the US, I have never seen any of those drives and dont really know anything about them, but I'm sure Don will figure this out, I'm just rambling to try to give some ideas as to where to look for the information ???

Re: Volvo Steering Fork, Small Shaft??

A knowledgeable parts person has identified it as a fix kit for an early 280 aluminum shaft.

as described, the early 280 aluminum shafts had the same small diameter as the 270's, and broke once in a while. The bolt on kit was the fix.

They are trying to find bushings for me over the next few days.

Thanks for the interest,
